Changing Board Culture

Culture is like the foundation of a house. Just as a strong foundation keeps a house stable through storms and changing weather, a healthy board culture supports a nonprofit through challenges and growth. If the foundation is weak or neglected, cracks will eventually show, leading to miscommunication, disengagement, and even conflict.

In this episode, Nancy and Sarah talk about why board culture matters and how to intentionally shape it. They explore four key areas—change, inclusion, learning, and conflict—and share practical tips on how to spark meaningful conversations. Tune in to learn how cultivating a strong, adaptable board culture can create a more engaged, collaborative, and resilient team.

Question to reflect on before you listen: How would you describe your board’s culture now?

Questions to consider

  1. How aware of you of your board culture?
  2. How does your board introduce its culture to new board members? Is it something you discuss or implied/left to figure out?
  3. How does your board manage conflict? What might you do to encourage an appropriate level of conflict about ideas?

Word of the week: Culture

Culture is all around us, and yet it is so easy not to notice or talk about because we can too easily assume everyone experiences the world as we do. How might you increase how your board talks about culture? How might you build a common definition that helps you work better together as a group?
