Episode 52: Well-functioning boards: Ideas for staff members

How do we make sure our boards are fully functioning in a joyful, productive way? In this episode, Nancy and Sarah talk to nonprofit staff members about what they can do to support their board as they build a movement for their mission. They talk about three ways staff members can help boards today: time, job roles, and communication.

This is the second in a two-part series on boards. Nancy and Sarah shared tips for board members in the previous episode. Make sure you listen to that episode to pick up some tips for board members.

At the start of the episode, Nancy announces her new board on-demand learning program, available on www.nonprofitlearning.center. “The Nonprofit Board Certificate Program” is available in English and Spanish.

Question to reflect on before you listen:
How does your staff work collaboratively with your board?

Discussion questions:

  1. What resonated with you about this conversation? What would you like to take back to your organization?
  2. We talked about time and how you can be effective, efficient, and expansive in how you use time. How could you apply this idea to your board?

Word of the week: Symbiotic
What does symbiotic mean to you as it relates to board and staff? What are some positive and negative versions of the symbiotic relationship between board and staff that you have seen?

What do you think?
